women of the south pole

there were more women than this, but not all came out for the photo.

i'm in christchurch, new zealand now. it's a beautiful sunny day and my pale arms are getting burned, but i couldn't resist eating breakfast at an outdoor cafe.

mardi gras, south pole style

the highest, coldest, driest mardi gras parade in the world (probably).

fat tuesday came early this year so we weren't too far off to celebrate before the bulk of us left pole. it being our last party of the season, we had a very good time. the carpenters did a requisite almost-nude drive around the parade route in -44 degree temps. one of them got some frostbite, but was worth it. i stayed bundled up riding on the back of a snowmobile tossing beads until we were inside for the after-party.
