An Erebus crystal is an anorthoclase mineral, a type of feldspar found in the immediate area surrounding Mount Erebus in Antarctica^[1]. This particular feldspar crystal is rich in sodium, potassium, and aluminum silicate.^[2][1] It can also be found on Mount Kenya.^[2]

Though the formation and growth of these crystals is not well understood,^[1] it is evident that the crystals grow in the magma beneath Mount Erebus and are ejected out of the mountain encased in glassy volcanic bombs. This glass structure quickly weathers away leaving the mountainside covered in crystals.^[2]

happy camper

snowcraft I training, aka happy camper, is required for anyone who might work off station. it's an overnight snow camping trip. we also have a simulated white-out where we have to find a lost camper.

go, paul and gav! these guys at scott base had too much time on their hands over winter. three room snow home. bedroom, lounge and entertainment room with electrical outlet and movie projector.

unusually cold for mcm

i managed to get a little frostnip on bridge of my nose. in just the short 5 minute walk to work. there was a small gap between face mask and goggles.

during some gusts, it got below -100F windchill.

a month here, a month there

i enjoyed an event-packed month in the bay area. hadn't been in sf during june in so many years. it's such a fun&busy time there.

now on my way to work a month in michigan at music festival. road trippin is fun, but i'm finally a little over it. long drive. in chicago now, so almost done.

going through sierra nevada, i missed my time working/hiking there. then utah, sigh... wyoming, saw antelope on side of the road, played brokeback mountain soundtrack.
colorado, missed it too. wanted to go to the ranch. time in boulder, co was too short, but i'll be back there briefly next month on way to the ice. stopped side of road in colo and picked some of those cool tiny sunflowers that grow all along highways in eastern, co, kansas, oklahoma, etc. put them in a bottle in cup holder to decorate the car. perfect against the pretty blue lights of the stereo. then iowa stopped to see family graves. was unplanned. but so glad i had those flowers with me.
