bats in oz

the other night, i saw the biggest bat i've ever seen. it was so big that at first i thought it was an owl. it didn't have that drunken, flitty flight that bats in the u.s. have. then at the mardi gras parade, there were so many of them flying way overhead. again i thought they were birds, but my friend informed me they were bats. since they were at the parade, we figured they must be gay bats there to represent. today while wandering through the botanical gardens, i saw so so many of them hanging upside down in the trees. they are grey headed foxes, otherwise known as fruit bats.

i leave sydney today and fly to melbourne for a brief vist before returning to san francisco on sunday. it will have been about six months i've been gone. it'll be good to get home.
