nacreous clouds

i was in the fire house dispatch office, checking back in after my hike, and the woman says, "did you see the nacreous clouds? they're over the royal society range. they aren't the greatest..." was all i heard as i rushed outside.

so i finally saw some. was hoping for them. they look like mother of pearl--turquoise, pink, purple, yellow. my picture didn't do it justice. they happen only in polar regions , mostly in the southern polar, during dusk & dawn. gaseous clouds creating or reflecting light in funky ways. maybe we'll get more spectacular ones before we go into 24 hr daylight.

my hike was up observation hill next to town. almost got blown over from the wind near the top, but worth it. nearly sunset, good lighting. this pix is looking south toward the pole (where i will hopefully go next month).
